Meet Susan Hallstrom | A Lifetime of Compassion, Advocacy & Senior Care
The Personal Story Behind Her Passion for Helping Seniors and Healthcare Organizations.
In this heartfelt video, Susan Hallstrom shares the personal journey that shaped her career in senior care and inspired her commitment to helping assisted living facilities, adult foster care providers, and long-term care organizations deliver exceptional care.
A Personal Journey That Began with Her Grandmother
Susan's dedication to caring for older adults began during her teenage years when her beloved grandmother, affectionately called "Grams," experienced a devastating stroke.
Following her grandmother's hospitalization, Susan, her mother, and her sister provided around-the-clock care in their family home for three years. They adapted their home to accommodate her grandmother's physical limitations and provided the daily assistance, emotional support, and compassionate attention she needed.
The name GRAMS holds special meaning for Susan, honoring the grandmother whose experience helped shape her life's work.
More Than 30 Years of Experience in Adult Foster Care and Senior Services
After her grandmother passed away, Susan's mother, a nurse, chose to continue caring for older adults by opening their family home to individuals needing assistance.
What began as a personal caregiving experience developed into a family-operated adult foster care business that served seniors and vulnerable adults for more than three decades.
Susan gained extensive hands-on experience supporting individuals with dementia, complex medical needs, physical disabilities, and end-of-life care requirements.
Her responsibilities included daily personal care, medication assistance, care coordination, supporting hospice services, and helping individuals maintain dignity and comfort throughout their lives.
The family eventually operated two adult foster care homes, and Susan also provided crisis respite support when other care providers needed assistance.
These experiences gave Susan a deep understanding of the responsibilities, challenges, and emotional demands associated with operating residential care settings.
Leadership in Nursing Home Social Services and Regulatory Compliance
Following her family's transition away from adult foster care, Susan expanded her professional experience into nursing home social services and assisted living operations.
As a Social Services Director, she worked closely with residents, families, interdisciplinary healthcare teams, and community organizations to address complex care needs and advocate for vulnerable individuals.
Her professional background also includes supervising assisted living homes, participating in community service initiatives, and navigating the challenging process of nursing facility closures.
Through these experiences, Susan developed a strong understanding of healthcare regulations, organizational accountability, resident rights, and the importance of maintaining quality care during difficult transitions.
Her experience as a compliance officer further strengthened her knowledge of regulatory expectations and the operational challenges healthcare organizations encounter.
A Voice for Those Who Cannot Speak for Themselves
One of the most meaningful aspects of Susan's career has been her dedication to resident advocacy.
Throughout her years in senior care, she has supported individuals and families through difficult decisions, grief, bereavement, hospice care, and end-of-life experiences.
Susan believes every individual deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect, especially those who may be unable to communicate or advocate for themselves.
Her approach to healthcare emphasizes listening, understanding individual needs, protecting resident rights, and ensuring that compassionate care remains at the center of every decision.
